October Player of the Month: Nick Lazurka

Hailing from the thumb of Michigan, Nicholas Lazurka is the University of Michigan’s October Player of the Month. Joining the team last winter, Nick has made the strides to become part of the A-side backline. His speed was evident in intrasquad sevens and he has now picked up the tools to be a consistent contributor to the team. Recently, Lazurka started in his first match against in-state rival, Michigan State, and finished a beautiful run to bring Michigan back in the game. Teams will see more of Nick throughout the year, that is for sure.

Why rugby?
I’ve always thought it was a cool sport and since, believe it or not, I’m not quite cut out for Michigan football, I thought I’d give rugby a try and have really enjoyed it.

I really enjoy the team camaraderie and the competitiveness of the sport especially since we are playing rivals like Michigan State and Ohio State.

My favorite drill would have to be 15 on 15 full tackle.

What other sports have you played?
I played football, basketball, and tennis during my four years of high school.

In 5 years, what do you see yourself doing?
After graduating next year, I plan on enlisting in the United States Air Force as a medic and obtaining my master’s degree in neuroscience in my spare time. After four years in the USAF, I plan on attending PA school.

My brothers and I losing in a fight with the neighbors with our ashamed father watching.

If you won the Michigan Millions, what would you do with the money?
I would buy a hot tub for the black house first of all. Then, I would pay for Tony Hawk’s and Big Nic’s shoulder surgeries. I’d also get Sequoyah a golf cart (instead of his subpar bike) with a radio flyer wagon attached so I can ride along to practice for free since Maverick is now charging me gas money. I’d invest the rest of my money after paying off all of these loans.

Best advice you’ve ever received?
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own- Matthew 6:34
