January Player of the Month: Brennen Arnett

brennan potm A stalwart in the pack, Brennen Arnett is the University of Michigan Rugby Football Club’s January Player of the Month. Within a year’s span, the front row has transformed from a position of low depth to the UMRFC’s stronghold. Arnett, the club’s unanimous choice for Top Freshman of the Year, was responsible for much of the change. In his first year of collegiate rugby, Arnett started every game at the loosehead position. With a couple more months of Coach Stu’s lifting program, Arnett will be wheeling scrums as he pleases.

Height: 6 foot 2 inches

Why rugby?

In high school, I was cut from the lacrosse team, and a buddy invited me to play rugby at Washtenaw Rugby Football Club. It was such a great fit that I never looked back. The atmosphere and coaching was much better than football so I played all four years for the WRFC.

What have you liked about Michigan rugby the most so far?

I like how there are no strangers in the community. Even when I just joined the team, I didn’t feel like a stranger.

Most memorable moment on the pitch?

My most memorable moment on the pitch was in Ireland. I was on a tour with the Detroit Tradesmen, and I scored a try for the first time on foreign soil.

What’s your favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?

My favorite drill is scrumming practice. My least favorite drill is the circuit at the end of practice.

What other sports have you played?

Football, wrestling, lacrosse, and soccer.

In 5 years, what do you see yourself doing?

I see myself in grad school.

What’s some embarrassing childhood memory you can tell us?

I ate a daddy long legs because my cousin told me it tastes good.

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?

Buffalo Wild Wings

Biggest fear?

Clowns. Who decided men in gaudy makeup sounded like a good idea?

Favorite food/meal?

Steak and a baked potato if I had to pick. Every meal is my favorite meal. Prop Life.

Any game day superstitions?

I think you should wear comfortable clothes.

Favorite superhero and why?

The Hulk because the more damage he takes, the stronger he gets.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t take life too seriously.

Congrats, Manbeast! Our first Washtenaw RFC player to be recognized on this page, but not the first to wear the maize and blue. Great first season, but think of the fun still to be had. Young WRFC guys iare looking to Brennen, Will and Shawn for that path to big time college rugby.

Congrats and well deserved!. I love it, a 285lb, straight running with a side step, PROP! Your excellent work ethic will continue to be rewarded. Mike Brooks is right, think of the fun to be had. WRFC is well represented M by all of their alum’s.
