July Player of the Month: Christian Mentzer

mentzer

This month’s Player of the Month is 5th year Christian Mentzer. Mentzer joined the team in 2012 after transferring from Western Michigan Universiy. He plays inside center and is one of the team’s leaders. Christian’s transition was noteworthy as he immediately impacted the team and added power to the backline. Mentzer looks to have another excellent year in what will be his last year with U of M.

Why rugby?
Rugby was a game I always wanted to play growing up but did not get a chance to until high school. I was just always fascinated by how intense the sport was. Playing in high school and throughout college has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The sport is such a great mix of power and creativity. Also, there is no tighter bond than the one that’s formed on the rugby pitch.

What have you liked about Michigan rugby the most so far?
The tradition and history of the club is something that inspires me. Putting on the maize and blue kit is something bigger than playing just a rugby game because of the way the club has touched so many ruggers. I look forward to the alumni of the month articles to hear about what the club has meant to so many Michigan men. The camaraderie between teammates though is what is most important to me. A player at the CRC said it best this year, “You have your friends, your best friends and then your rugby mates.”

Most memorable moment on the pitch?
It would have to be when we beat MSU at home to finish out the fall season. In 4 years of playing collegiate rugby I had never beaten State. It was a goal we set in the pre-season, and one that the whole team believed was possible. It was a major hurdle the team overcame and an accomplishment that we will use as a stepping stone this year.

What’s your favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
I love good old fashioned 4v3. My least favorite drill is anything that coach Davy was involved in.

What other sports have you played?
I played varsity football and varsity soccer at Saline High School. Go Hornets!

In 5 years, what do you see yourself doing?
The brahj will probably be traveling the world, writing his own version of the famous book “Eat, Pray, Love.” On a serious note I would like to stay in the Ann Arbor area and work in sales or business analysis.

What’s some embarrassing childhood memory you can tell us?
I was so afraid of girls in middle school that in 7th grade when my 8th grade girlfriend (true story) went to kiss me I freaked out and at the last second jerked my head sideways so fast I ended up head butting her in the face. It was pretty smooth.

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?
I’m big into comics and graphic novels so I love the Vault of Midnight store. As far as food is concerned I go through withdrawals if I don’t eat at Chela’s at least 2 times a week.

Biggest fear?
There is nothing I fear more than losing muscle mass. Just thinking about it is giving me the chills.

Favorite food/meal?
Slow smoked barbeque ribs with a side of baked beans and cornbread.

Any game day superstitions?
If anyone has watched gladiator you’ll notice Russell Crowe’s character rubs his hands with dirt before every battle. Before every game I rub my hands with dirt or grass, making it the cheesiest game day superstition of all time.

Favorite superhero and why?
I’m pretty big into comics and I’ve always loved Captain America growing up. He does not have any crazy powers or suit of armor. The guy fights with a shield, which for all intents and purposes, is a defense only weapon. He has a never surrender, never back down blue-collar American spirit. He’s the best.

Best advice you’ve ever received?
I’ve been lucky to be around many influential people in my life, so picking a single piece of advice is difficult. I would instead prefer ending on my favorite quote; “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” -Gandhi

Christian is our Grandson and we are proud his many accomplishments including his Rugby. He has always been a respectful and loving Grandson and strong family person. I feel that these qualities are what makes him a good team player. Congrats to Christian, Player of the Month.

Christian/C-rock. Your player of the month profile is quite impressive. Sometimes we look far for the answers in life when in fact ~ we only need to look right in front of us. Strength, will, persistance, loyalty, gratitude, & ambition are just a few of the things that come to mind after reading this. There is no doubt you will have a great senior year. Good luck and God Bless you and your team this year.
