Colin Walters is a sophomore that joined near the beginning of the spring season in 2015. Over the summer, he took Stu’s summer lifting program seriously and came back the in the fall without about 30 pounds of extra muscle stacked on. Since then he has improved greatly in the sport and is proving to be a play maker and  leader on the Academy side.

Why Rugby?
My cousins played at Ferris State and told me that I should play but I didn’t think I’d be very good. Then second semester Fish invited me to come watch the Intersquad Championship and I thought it looked fun and that I could be good at it so I started going to practice the next week.

What have you liked about Michigan rugby the most so far?
How close the team is for sure. There aren’t really divisions among the players everyone gets along with everyone.

Most memorable moment on the pitch?
In our academy side game this year against Notre Dame, I knocked their scrum half to the ground with a stiff arm to the face after Crawdad (Nick Mattes) offloaded to me and I went in to score the try. On the film you can see him pick up his mouth guard after getting up off the ground (32 minute mark if you want to watch for yourself on Youtube).

What’s your favorite rugby drill in practice? Least Favorite?
I like the 2v1 or 3v2 small grid drills with an emphasis on finding the space and creativity. Least favorite is fitness

What other sports have you played?
I played hockey and lacrosse in high school and played pretty much everything else at some point growing up.

In 5 years what do you see yourself doing?
Either working full time or in graduate school

What’s an embarrassing childhood memory you can share with us?
In second grade I was written up at lunch recess for playing tag on our jungle gym with two of my friends. The next morning our three names were called over the announcements to come down to the office, When we got there we were scolded for a half hour by our principle about our reckless playing.

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?
Because of living on North Campus and poor scheduling on my part my freshman year I had a lot of gaps in my schedule and spent a lot of time in the Ugli (often watching Netflix) so that is probably the place I was at most, I can’t really think of anywhere that I went that was cool enough to be considered my favorite place so I’ll go with the Ugli.

Biggest Fear?
Letting down friends or loved ones

Favorite food/meal?
My favorite meal is pretty much anything barbecue (steak, ribs, pulled pork, etc.)

Any game-day superstitions?
Nothing other than putting my kit on in a certain order. When I played hockey I got to the point of having to get to the rink about three hours early just to make it through all of my superstitions and that was way too stressful whenever I would mess one up or forget one so I have tried to avoid them in other sports.

Favorite superhero and why?
Batman, because he doesn’t really have a superpower but just made himself a superhero by working out and spending money.

Best advice you’ve ever received?
My dad used to always tell me to “be the difference” before games so I would try to make sure that even if I didn’t change the outcome of the game I wanted to have some sort of an affect on the game.
