Men’s 7s Collects the Plate in Ohio

NDC 7s 2016

This past weekend the 7s side traveled to Ohio for the Notre Dame College Collegiate Challenge Cup. This 7s tournament qualifier for the USA Rugby College 7s championship. The Wolverines were put into Pool B alongside Xavier and St. Bonaventure.

In the first game of the day, Michigan faced off against Xavier. This one was an impressive shut out with the boys pulling off a 43-0 win. Tries came from Matt Kasten, Cooper Smart, Nick “Crawdad” Mattes, and Dave Williamson.

Next, the young lads played a tough match against St. Bonaventure. The result was a loss (14-32) but the young squad learned a lot.

In the third match of the day, the Wolverines were up against Cincinnati. Things seemed to be going the Wolverines’ way at first, ending the half `12-0, but things fell apart in the second half as Cincinnati was able to pull off a combeack, winning 19-12.

The end result on the day was a plate win (5th place) over Miami of Ohio. This was the first 7s tournament on American soil for the 2016 season and a young side learned a tremendous amount with this past tournament. The boys are hard at work in the weight room and on the pitch preparing for the opening leg of the Big Ten 7s tournament on April 2 in Columbus, OH. The team is looking forward towards Big Ten play and preparing for the Collegiate Rugby Championship in June in the City of Brotherly Love.
