The June Player of the Month is Alex Davidson. Alex grew up in England excluding a short spell in Ann Arbor due to his parents’ time at the university. That made an impression on Davidson who chose to come back to U of M and bring his rugby skills with him. A tall yet mobile and skilled player, Alex played lock during the fifteens season and was also a prop for the sevens team. Besides his on-field abilities, Alex’s wit and positive attitude will be missed come fall. We honor Alex now as it has been our honor of giving him a home away from home during his time at Michigan.

Height: 6′ 5″

Why rugby?
I’ve played rugby since a young age and have always really enjoyed playing alongside my mates and working as team to achieve a goal. I also love the social aspect of the sport, especially having a chat with the opposition after the game over some food.

What have you liked about Michigan rugby the most so far?
When I first arrived in Ann Arbor I wasn’t sure what to expect from the rugby here. I went down to practice and was really impressed with not only the standard of play, but also the desire to improve, the coaching and the clear love for the game. I couldn’t help but get involved. What I have most enjoyed about Michigan rugby has been the welcoming environment the team created from the moment I and anyone else joined, and the desire to uphold the traditional elements of rugby such as the socials.

Most memorable moment on the pitch?
Outside of Michigan Rugby, probably facing a Haka in New Zealand on tour with my high school in 2009. At Michigan, in my first game of the year, watching an unnamed player hit himself in the head over and over again to psych himself up was pretty amusing. Just being part of the CRC was incredible, but the victory over Ohio State on national television is pretty hard to beat!

What’s your favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
My favorite is probably anything involving line-outs, I enjoy seeing the results of getting the detail right as a team. Least favorite is tackle progression, the less said about that the better.

What other sports have you played?
In high school I swam a lot, and played cricket each summer. I also enjoy skiing and was lucky enough to work a ski season in the French Alps before going to University.

In 5 years, what do you see yourself doing?
Hopefully doing something I enjoy which has a positive impact on the world. Also making trips back to the Olde Boy’s Weekend and to the CRC to watch the Maize and Blue.

What’s some embarrassing childhood memory you can tell us?
Probably crying every time we lost a rugby game until approximately age 11. We were pretty rubbish, so this was a regular occurrence.

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?
The Arb or the Black House. Both ends of the spectrum.

Biggest fear?
Being boring.

Favorite food/meal?
Fish and Chips with mushy peas.

Any game day superstitions?
Not really. Just watch the Brahj for inspiration…

Favorite superhero and why?
Batman. Does the good stuff without seeking glory. (and he can fly)

Best advice you’ve ever received?
“Never stand still, and never look back.”
