November Player of the Month: Michael Shay

Michael Shay

Michael Shay

This is Mike Shay’s first year of rugby, and what a year it has been. Since the industrial and operations engineer joined the team he has spent time on the developmental, academy and made his 1st XV appearance against Ohio State. Mike has dedicated himself to learning and improving on the fundamentals of the game, and that is the main reason for his quick success. He is also emerging as a club man, recently asking to join in the fundraising effort. Mike’s intensity, high work rate, and ability to put the team above himself makes him a perfect example of what it means to play rugby at Michigan.

Why rugby?

I missed being part of a team, missed hitting people, and knew that I would like the rugby culture after seeing it first hand at Shippensburg when I visited my brother.

What have you liked about Michigan rugby the most so far?

I like having a great group of teammates to play alongside and how strong the support is from our Olde Boys

Most memorable moment on the pitch?

My most memorable moment on the pitch was beating Michigan State on the Academy side and stiff arming someone for the first time in my life during the match.

What’s your favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?

My favorite rugby drill is either the shame game or when we do wrestling games against a teammate. My least favorite is the repeated effort drill for StuFit.

What other sports have you played?

I played football, wrestled, and threw for the track team in high school.

In 5 years, what do you see yourself doing?

In five years I see myself in a sales management position.

What’s some embarassing childhood memory you can tell us?

Growing up I used to be known as yellow boy in school because I wore yellow every single day.

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?

BTB, the Broken Egg, or Carson’s American Bistro. I love eating.

Biggest fear?

Situations in which I feel like I could fall. Stuff like being on an edge that’s high up without a railing or leaning against a window in a skyscraper freak me out.

Favorite food/meal?

I love steak and BBQ food no matter what it is.

Any game day superstitions?

I lay on the ground, roll on my back, then back to my front without a shirt on right before I put on my kit.

Favorite superhero and why?

My favorite superhero is Raphael from the Ninja Turtles. I always liked TMNT and he was my favorite because he was angry and aggressive.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.
