Intrasquad Sevens Day Four

Game 1: James J. Duderstadt 0 – Bennie Oosterbaan 17
The first game of the night was a heavyweight matchup between the number one and number two seeded teams. Chris Hopfner scored on a tough unconverted try while running through a couple of Duderstadt defenders. Seven minutes later he added another blazing try which sweeper Grady Bridges successfully converted. After multiple changes of possession in a feisty, error-ridden match, Team Oosterbaan sealed the deal with Richi Kanu’s blazing run down the sideline.

Game 2: Don Canham 34 – James Earl Jones 7
Team Canham began the game with smart passes and great hands as they moved down the field. When Team Jones finally got the ball, Nick Lazurka made a textbook tackle on the sideline. One of many for Nick on the night. He also showed his offensive prowess with a great breakaway try that CJ Stock successfully converted. A few minutes later, Drew Vecchio passed the ball to Chris Vasileff who assisted CJ Stock’s streaking run down the sideline for the second try. Stock continued his scoring ways a few minutes later thanks to Scott Miller’s assist. Vasileff then thanked Miller with a beauty of an offload for a try converted by Stock. Team Jones finally got onto the scoreboard with Kenny Andutan’s solo breakaway try and conversion. Another stellar example of teamwork allowed Lazaruka to complete the brace. Just before the match ended, Sam Kishinevsky added a seventh try for Team Canham.

Game 3: Stephen M. Ross 28 – Mary Sue Coleman 12
Team Ross opened up the scoring with a 40 meter try and conversion by Chris Padmos in the third minute. A couple minutes later, Mike Wilinski of Team Coleman answered after a stolen ruck ball was spun left for the score from 30 meters out. Just as the second half began, Karl Boothman broke away to score on a great 30 meter run down the sideline. Chad Kelsey converted the try and Team Coleman took the lead. A huge 60 meter breakaway by injury replacement Jamie Hickey was halted by a stellar effort by Nick Marcus as he chased him down and tackled him; however Mike LaCivita gathered up the ball and scored the game tying try. Joel Conzelmann’s conversion put Team Ross ahead by two points. Minutes later, injury replacement Neil Matouka put in a Conzelmann converted try as Team Ross began to pull away. Just before the end of the game, Neil then assisted Jared Bosma for a try converted by Conzelmann to put the game out of reach.

Game 4: Don Canham 21 – Bennie Oosterbaan 12
After team Oosterbaan defeated team Duderstadt in the first match, Team Canham was in prime position to overtake Team Duderstadt for second place. Team Oosterbaan opened up the scoring when Dave Hiltzik picked the ball up from a scrum and scored an unconverted try. Minutes later, Joel Conzelmann then returned the favor to Hiltzik with a streaking run down through the middle that ended in a cheeky chip right past the tired Hiltzik for the try and conversion. Grady Bridges then broke a couple tackles in a fantastic converted try through the heart of the Canham defense. Jaime Hickey and Scott Miller scored on two successive converted tries in the second half to shut this game away for Team Canham. Both converted by CJ Stock.

Game 5: James Earl Jones 24 – Stephen M. Ross 21
In the first minute of this exciting match, Team Jones opened up the scoring with a display of great hands, passing the ball down the line to Richi Kanu who sped past the defense. Converted by Conzelmann, 7-0. Richi then broke through for a 40 meter run for another try converted by Conzelmann. Phillipe Kirschen of Team Ross answered by poaching the ruck and then running the ball in for an unconverted try. Riding off the momentum, Evan Rourke looped around Mike LaCivita for an unconverted try down the sideline. Joel Conzellman attempted to put the game out of reach with a try and conversion. Kirschen then closed the gap with a beautiful 40 meter breakaway try and the conversion to put the game within four points. With just one minute to play, Kenny Andutan broke a tackle in the middle of the field and took the ball the rest of the 40 meters for the try and conversion as Team Jones came back from eleven down to win the game at the last second.

Game 6: Mary Sue Coleman 10 – James J. Duderstadt 31
The final match started when Evan Noon of Team Duderstadt faked left and ran the ball in for a self-converted try. Colin Ward added another after great ball handling and teamwork by Team Duderstadt exposed the gaps in Team Coleman’s defense. Up by two tries, the Dudes put on the pressure and forced a turnover that resulted in a try by Sam Kishinevsky as the first half came to a close. 19-0, Dudes. In the second half, Nick Marcus streamed down the sideline as he shed defenders on his way to a try. Fantastic ball handling allowed Noon to assist Matthew Crabtree for a beautiful converted try. Attempting to get back into the game, Team Coleman’s Marcus broke through the defense followed by an offload to Sergio Rocha who then gave the ball to Karl Boothman who scored. Late in the match, Ellis Kolber returned a kickoff straight through the defense to put the game away.
