SISU™ Mouthguard April Player of the Month: George Janke

Well, this is a little awkward…I was chosen as Player of the Month. However, I also write all of the Player of the Month articles. I formatted it the same way as it usually is and answered all the questions that I usually ask.

Congratulations to George Janke, our Player of the Month!

Position: Hooker

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 190 lbs

Year: Freshman

Major: Undecided

Hometown: McLean, VA

Why did you decide to play rugby?
It wasn’t really on purpose. During welcome week, my orientation friend Max Xie (also on the team) told me there were some guys playing rugby up at Mitchell Field, and that it would be fun. I showed up, and I think I realized it was a team when some middle-aged guy came up to me and shook my hand and said, “Hi, I’m Matt.”

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
Rugby is really really really fun. Other than that, I love how inclusive this team is. It was my first week on campus and all the older guys treated me like I was family.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field.
It has to be when I got onto the field during our win against Michigan State this year. We had just gone up by two tries, and Coach put me in with about a minute left. Brandon Walter kept repeating to me, “Don’t mess this up George.”

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
Favorite: Beans. Least favorite: The shoulder exercises the forwards have to do.

What other sports have you played?
I played baseball in high school and also swam a little.

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
I’ll be watching Michigan Rugby dominate the Big Ten.

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?
In fifth grade, my mom convinced me to wear my boxers to school for pajama day.

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
The Arb, but specifically the trail that runs along Huron River

What is your biggest fear?
Tearing my ACL or something like that

What is your favorite food?
Either pasties or cottage cheese and pineapple

Do you have any game-day superstitions?
I hype myself up by listening to Jason Aldean’s 2010 album My Kinda Party.

Who is you favorite superhero and why?
When I was little I liked Aquaman because he seemed the most similar to Percy Jackson.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
When someone holds the door for you, say thank you.

Again, congratulations to our April Player of the Month, George Janke!

Nice profile, George! I can’t believe your mom convinced you to wear boxers to school. Yikes! Sounds like you’re having a blast with rugby. Go Blue!
