SISU™ Mouthguard March Player of the Month: Armen Vartanian

Armen Vartanian is a 6’0″ sophomore who played outside center in the fall, but has transitioned to prop for sevens. Despite battling a hamstring injury, Armen has demonstrated outstanding commitment and charisma throughout intrasquad competition and on spring tour, including a great performance against Arizona State. He is our Player of the Month!

Why did you decide to play rugby?
I played sports my whole life and didn’t want it to end in college. Rugby was the perfect way to continue playing sports while trying something new.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
I love the physicality. It’s a lot of fun.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field
The Michigan State game was my favorite moment so far. It was the first time I was able to take part in the infamous rivalry. It was a battle, and I had some great plays.

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
I like any rucking and poaching drills.

What other sports have you played?
I played soccer my whole life, and I swam for 5 years.

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
Hopefully working for an innovative prosthetic company.

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?
In second grade my older brother pantsed me at recess. Tough times.

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
The gym!

What is your biggest fear?
Otto Janke.

What is your favorite food?
Anything Armenian.

Do you have any game-day superstitions? Explain. 
Nope.

Who is your favorite superhero and why? 
I love Batman, the Dark Knight trilogy was too good, and I can’t wait to see the new one.

What is the best advice you have ever received? 
Put your head down and be consistent, the results will come.
