SISU™ Mouthguard May Player of the Month: Keith Hudson

Keith Hudson is a senior that started playing rugby in Fall 2021. He worked hard to improve all school year, and played his way onto the 7s second side in the spring. He is our Player of the Month!

Position: Hooker

Height: 5’8″

Weight: 175 lbs

Year: Senior

Major: Biology, Health, and Society

Hometown: Southfield, MI

Why did you decide to play rugby?
I kept telling my friends that I wanted to try something different this year. So, when I was approached to play rugby, I decided to try it! If I didn’t like it, no big deal. But, I ended up liking the sport and my teammates as well.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
Definitely the genuine camaraderie on the team. I’ve heard from a few guys about toxic environments on some club teams. I’m glad that I never had that experience. All of the guys are really cool and I’m grateful that I made some really great friends.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field
It was the last game in the fall season for second side. I was the starting hooker (which I was already nervous about) and I had my family and friends come see me. I was throwing the ball in the lineout literally right in front of my friends. I was nervous as hell. But, it turned out to be a really good throw and it was nice to hear my friends cheer me on.

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
Favorite: CanJam or continuous touch
Least favorite: the Bronco, hands down

What other sports have you played?
I ran track in high school and played football for a year. The irony in playing rugby is that my favorite part is tackling, but I hated that part in football.

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
Hopefully I’ll be in medical school. I’m taking a gap year before pursuing my master’s degree and then heading to medical school.

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?
I wore a burgundy velvet track suit to go with a new pair of Jordans to school. My friend said I looked like their grandma’s couch. Some people questioned the fit, but I still think it was a look.

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
Kerrytown

What is your biggest fear?
Failure — it’s cliché but true

What is your favorite food?
I absolutely love yams! Shrimp and/or chicken alfredo is a close second.

Do you have any game-day superstitions? Explain.
I used to do a quick prayer so I wouldn’t get severely hurt during games. But, then I tore my ACL so clearly that didn’t work!

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
That’ll be a toss up between Dr. Strange and Scarlet Witch. I’m a big fan of Marvel and the magical element that those two bring to the franchise stands out to me.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
People experience the most growth when they’re uncomfortable. You can either be comfortable and stagnate or stretch yourself  become uncomfortable and grow.

Again, congratulations to our May Player of the Month, Keith Hudson!
