Ty West is our September Player of the Month. West is a freshman recruited from Santa Rosa, California. He competed well in August, won the starting flanker job, and has started every game this season.

Major: PPE (Political Science, Philosophy, and Economics)

Hometown: Santa Rosa, CA

Why did you decide to play rugby?
As a way to meet people and stay in shape.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
The community that I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of and making connections that are deeper than rugby.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field.
For Michigan, it was assisting a try early in the second half against Western Michigan this year.

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
My favorite is the tennis ball hands game, my least favorite is probably when we have sprints at the end of practice.

What other sports have you played?
Football, Baseball, Basketball

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
I see myself working and living in a big city. Hopefully still playing some sort of organized rugby!

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?
I put a bunch of coffee beans up my nose and almost had to go to the hospital.

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
The Big House

What is your biggest fear?
Drowning

What is your favorite food?
Fried chicken sandwiches

Do you have any game-day superstitions? Explain. 
I keep all the tape from my sausages/wrists from every game, win or lose.

Who is your favorite superhero and why? 
Captain America because he is well-rounded and brave.

What is the best advice you have ever received? 
“Give more than you expect to receive.”
