Wolverines Find Mixed Results in Preseason

Since arriving in Ann Arbor in mid-August, Michigan’s rugby players new and old have been hard at work for the fall XVs season. Under the supervision of new head coach Christian Mentzer, the Wolverines hope to improve on their 4-6 record last fall.

The preseason began at Cincinnati on August 25, with Michigan hoping to improve on last year’s 38-8 victory. Despite 95-degree heat and limited numbers, the Wolverines’ top side put up eleven tries to land a 61-5 final. Highlights included strong transition play, with sophomore wing Tommy Hamann scoring four tries.

From there, Michigan returned home to Mitchell Field, facing off against Bowling Green in their home debut on September 1. Finding themselves playing defense for the vast majority of the match, Michigan’s ruggers fell 10-35, with the forward pack unable to gain leverage in scrums.

Last weekend, the First Side took time off and focus was on the Second Side, playing Hillsdale’s top side. Bright spots have shone through every week in developmental play, but the offensive and defensive schemes have yet to come together.

From here, the Wolverines have four more consecutive games at home, starting with Ohio State on Friday. The Second Side kicks off the action at 7:30pm, with the First Side following immediately after at 9pm.
