SISU™ Mouthguard December Player of the Month: Alexander Afnan

Alexander Afnan is our December Player of the Month. After joining the team during two-a-day training this fall, Alexander has stepped up and gotten First Side minutes at prop. Congratulations Alexander!

Why did you decide to play rugby?
One of my best friends during my junior year of high school told me I had to play rugby. So, I showed up to practice and never looked back.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
I love the culture of the program. Everyone, from the coaches and alumni to the players, shows up ready to work hard for success.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field.
It’s hard to choose just one, but I would have to say that during game one at Cincinnati, I blew up about three rucks in a row and the whole team was cheering.

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
My favorite drill is 99 scrimmage, or live scrumming. My least favorite drill is probably the Malcolm.

What other sports have you played?
Some other sports I have played are powerlifting, football, and track & field.

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
In five years I see myself in medical school.

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?
One time I was going to breakfast with my dad, and I tripped in front of the door and the cement cut my whole face up.

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
Probably the Big House; I have so many fun memories there as a kid and now as a student.

What is your biggest fear?
Quitting when I still have effort to give.

What is your favorite food?
Anything my dad cooks.

Do you have any game-day superstitions? Explain.
I always listen to Thunderstruck by AC/DC as my last song; I’ve done it since high school and the song always gets me in the right mindset.

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
I’ve always loved Iron Man because he doesn’t possess any superpowers—he just has his intelligence and determination.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
No matter how tired you might feel, always try to push yourself for five more minutes.
