Position: Wing

Height: 5’8”

Weight: 120 lbs

Year: Senior

Major: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI

Why did you decide to play rugby?
Sophomore year was the first year back from COVID. I was looking for things to do once I got back on campus, and Tommy Hendricks, who’s an old friend and had joined the rugby team, mentioned that the club needed help off the field. I joined as the Digital Media Manager, got elected Chief Logistics Officer, and spent most of my time in that role. When the opportunity came to complete my time at Michigan Rugby by stepping into a game, I had to take it.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
The commitment. I’ve never before been part of an organization where so many people dedicate themselves to excellence. It’s inspired me to work harder in my own life.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field.
Getting ledgered. I may have accidentally tripped a guy and missed a tackle, but being able to put on the Maize & Blue for the first time and step off the field as one with my teammates was an unforgettable experience. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
Favorite: Not sure the name, but there was a drill we ran where basically someone with the ball would run a wheel route, and the defender would have to shuffle in front of them and decide when to turn and try to beat them to the edge. Pretty fun.

Least favorite: none 😎

What other sports have you played?
Tennis, Baseball

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
Hopefully I’ll be in med school studying sports medicine.

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?

When I was a kid, maybe around first grade, I called a hotel worker “sweetheart.” My whole family burst out laughing. They won’t let me forget about it. I wish that they would.

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
Yost Ice Arena. Gotta love the energy. Also Frita Batidos.

What is your biggest fear?
Bad van names.

What is your favorite food?
My mom’s keema paratha. It’s like spiced ground beef in a flatbread thing. Look it up. Unreal.

Do you have any game-day superstitions? Explain.
None.

Who’s your favorite superhero? Why?
Spider-Man. He’s a young guy, way easier to relate to. Also he’s always yappin. Reminds me of me.

Again, congratulations to our March Player of the Month, Ali Azeem!
